A fellow once told me there Were three kinds of lies: a white lie, a d— lie, and college cata. logue—but he should have said seed catalogue.

Think of all the hours spent by Americans during these long winter evenings, studying the seedbooks and picturing his garden (or visioning her flower garden) for the coming summer. Did any of your tomatoes look like the pictures in the book? Have you raised a rose bush that produced even one bloom like unto the photograph?

When disappointment grips my soul, come the lush and bountiful summer* it is a firm opinion in these quarters that the guy who got up the seed catalogue should be shot at sunrise; but right now, with winter in its dreariest, the old bird should be given a medal. I can see the lovely vegetables spread over my garden in exact duplication of the colorful pages in the seed book. The magnificent gnnuals and perennials furnish glory in the mind’s eye, located in exactly the correct spot near my home.

My order will be off soon to the seed catalogue, and with the first warm days and renewed faith, to match the energies of the first bright sunshiny day, I shall march forth to have my summer garden just like the beautiful pictures in the books.

It would be very wise if the subject were not mentioned after May 1. By that time, my energies will have diminished, my faith will be shattered, my temper short, the weeds tall, and I would derive great pleasure in choking the fel
