Fruit trees bloom early in the year, and in. sects in abundance are not likely to be present at that time. Some flies, solitary bees, wasps, butter* flies, and honeybees are likely to be present. If honeybees are not found,, or if they are few in number, prospects for a good fruit crop are poor, for the other insects mentioned are not as well fitted for carrying pollen. The entire life of the honeybee depends upon nectar and pollen from flowers. Its body is clothed with hairs which cause pollen to adhere to its body and be carried from flower to flower and pollinate blossoms While searching for nectar. The bee also has special structures on its body for rubbing pollen off its body and collecting it on a hairy brush. Stiff spines on the inside of each hind leg act as a comb for removing the pollen from the brush, after which it is squeezed to the outside of the legs and patted down by the middle legs into a ring of hairs forming the "pollen basket.” In this basket, pollen is carried home to the hive to provide food for young bees,"as well as adults* * Pollen provides bees with protein and minerals, and nectar provides them with the carbohydrates necessary for normal development. - The honeybee is the only insect man can increase in large numbers and move about from place to place.to accomplish the tremendous job of pollination. In a single blossom, there are five florets to be pollinated; on a single tree, thousands of blossoms; and in an acre of average-sised fruit trees, there are hundreds of thousands . of flowers which must be visited by insects in a few days, if a paying crop of fruit is to be produced.
