The above story appeared in a Richmond paper on Monday, following the announcement of the story over a nation-wide radio hook-up on news reports Sunday night and Monday morning.
Mrs. Davis, Washington’s ladymayor, states that the origin of the story begins with Mayor Cowan of Fredericksburg. Mayor.. Cowan has enjoyed teasing the Lady Mayor, asking her if she really can cook, and remarking on the width of the Rappahannock River up in her native county as compared with the mighty Rappahannock at his city of Fredericksburg. When Mayor Davis heard that Mayor Cowan had wagered the President couldn’t throw a dollar across the Rappahannock, Mrs. Davis thought it was time she got back at Mayor Cowan for some of his teasing. She volunteered to cook the pip for the President and told Mayor Cowan she would prove that she really : could cook. ■
As the story turned out, following the telegram to the President, it gave the appearance she might be hitting at the administration’s "spending, but that was not the original beginning of the story at all, and was beyond any meaning of hers, the Mayor says.
