Old Church Torn
Down In Woodville
The old Methodist Church in Woodville that survived the 1929 tornado with only the loss of its foundation, has been torn down. Townsmen, for years, have viewed the church with awe. For when the winds swept through Woodville on the second of May in 1929, buil'dings on every side were demolished, while the church was merely moved from its foundation and set down about 6 feet in the rear.
This sturdy church had its beginning on the third of June in 1882, when land was conveyed by L. T. Rector and Adelia Rector to Silas B. Johnson, Lyle Millan, L. T. Rector, Reuben A. Kibler, Samuel T. Alexander, trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, for the purpose of erecting upon it a church building. Then this church was sold by its trustees February 26, 1930 to Lucy S. Mason, Margaret D. Mason and Annie Belle Yancey. On May 1, 1947, it was sold by Lucy S. Mason (et al) to Robert L. Brown. Over the years depreciation and decay had set in. In its latest days the building was hardly a shell of its former self, and was useful only as a pigeon roost.
