In the Fire House Hall, cleverly lecorated with pines, and red candles, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Rapjahannock Fire Company entertained :he firemen and their guests, Friday :vening, January 29. Around sixty lome firemen, visiting firemen and members of the Rescue Squad, were present to enjoy the meal of turkey and all that "goes with it.” H. S. Barksdale, the ^ witty ' toastmaster opened the program and called on W. C.. Compton for the invocation. Mrs. Bruce Bowie, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, welcomed the group to the banquet. Following the meal, the guests were entertained and instructed by a brief speech by J. Everett Wills/ president of the Virginia State Firemen’s Association and Past President of the Northern Virginia Firemen’s Association. Bruce Bowie, in his in- - iroduction of Mr. Wills, reminded the group that Mr. Wills was an old friend of theirs (having spoken at the Firemen's picnic during the summer) and a person that was always at home with firemen, wherever they gather. - Mr. Wills, in an attractive persuasive ^ manner, ^convinced the group of the necessity of having a fire company in every community. He told the group of the state-wide progress, in past days and of the ambitions plans under discussion for future progress. He vowed that he knew of no other organization composed of all creeds and colors that worked so effectively for one common cause.

Miss Ruth SteVens, treasurer of ti>e Ladies Auxiliary, in a unique manner, presented the Firemen with
pit-$100 dqlfcr T&BfZqfSm-'asvhv gift from the Auxiliary. Wade H.Massie, Jr., vice president of the Rappahannock County Home Mutual Fire Insurance Company, offered a. token of appreciation to the Firemen for their valuable contribution as he presented. Fire Chief L. V.' Merrill with a check for $100.
A native' of Rappahannock, the Hon. W. C. Armstrong of Front Royal, presented the guest speaker of the evening, Frank Stoutamyer of Front Royal. Mr. §.toutamyer,' chief " of the Front Royal Fire Company, is no stranger in Rappahannock having i spoken here on several previous occasions. Mr. Armstrong’s recollections, reviewed in his introduction, were amusing to all, and especially so to the “old timers” present.
The firemen’-s duty to prevent fires, as well as fight them, was stressed by Mr. Stoutamyer.' A fireman should be fire conscious at all times. Furthermore, his work with the fire company, should blend into the other phases of his life and influence him for the good.
Throughout the program there was group singing, • led by Mrs. Paul Nichols. The whole evening’s entertainment gave one a feeling of beginning *to know the real work of a fire company and to realfze its value in any community’s life.
