Difficulty as to His Flesh: v. 48 "I am the bread of life.” What did He mean here? In John’s prologue we find the statement "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Now the phrase "The Word became flesh,” is another way of saying that when He 'came into the world veiled in the flesh of man, that God by the way of immaculate conception and the Virgin birth created a new humanity which would be free from Adams fall, but yet grateful on to the old race by his mother. That is He would be free from sin by overcoming sin and prepare a way for you and I to return to the Father^ His flesh was a new humanity “That is the living bread?” His flesh was thus given for the life of the world, and human life can be sustained and satisfied only as it finds its source and sustainance in Christ, Who is the source of all life. Except as we take that life which He manifested in the flesh and assimilate into our own so that we in turn become Christ like we fail.
As to the effect of this claim upon the Disciples: We find them saying, “This is a harsh saying, who can hear it.” And many turned back.
