John 6:48-69
The Scripture lesson for Sunday February 7 is taken from the Gospel of John 6:40-71. In this particular section of John’s Gospel we see Jesus manifesting Himself as the source of life. That is He is the sustenance of life. That which is not only the source of life, but also that which continues to sustain life.
When Jesus proclaimed Himself, “The bread of life,”, it aroused a controversy among those who heard him. In verses 41 to 59 we see the account of the controversy in regard to this person and purpose in life and the remainder of the chapter gives the effects which this claim had upon the disciples and followers of Jesus.
As to His Person: They thought they ktiew all about Him and His family, but the fact,was they knew, very little about the mystery of His person. Mary could not reveal this to the public without being in danger, of being stoned to death or at least great embarrassment and ridicule. This was a part of the sword which was to pierce her heart according to Nathaniel’s prophecy. Their problem arose beca.use*-of their ignorance as to His person. Often our own problems arise likewise “because of ignorance.
He made no attempt to correct their ignorance, but proceeded to reveal Himself in another way. In v. 44 He tells us, “No one can come to Me except the Father which sent Me draw him.” That is no one can see and understand Him except the Father reveals it to us. We cannot see something which is hidden from us. However, we often fail to heed
