HELPING TEEN-AGERS IS COMMUNITY PROJECT
Being a Teen-Ager has always been difficult, but it seems the members of today’s between 12 and 20 group have a special set of problems built and waiting for them.
Probably not the least of which is the term “teen-ager” itself. Many young people have complained about the constant use of the term, and the way it tends to —set them apart from the rest of society.
And, unfortunately, often in a non-flattering manner. As one high school girl , put it, “Why ns so much publicity given to wrong doings of teen-agers AS SUCH.
“You don,t read headlines saying ‘Middle-agers caught in gambling raid.’ Why must teen-agers as a group, be made to feel guilty for the wrongs of a few individuals?”
We* can see the girl’s point. Certainly, unflattering publicity of any group makes other 'members of the same group feel badly.
But of course, the use or nonuse of the term teen-ager itself hardly gets down tot^ereal^facts. When youth is in trouble/^ is quite obvious that it IS youth—no matter what the term—and that is a major social problem.
We don’t think ignoring or concealing the troubles young people get into is going to help. Rather, the problem needs to ibe brought out into the open, examined, and solutions tried.
Once the facts are brought out, what is to be done? This is a more difficult problem, and one in which every citizen must play a leading role.
Many communities have done and are doing remarkable jobs in this direction. They sponsor programs to help youth develop along constructive lines.
We believe more such programs^ are needed. Working jointly with community forces, can make teenagers feel useful and wanted.
Young people are restless— they want something to do, somewhere to go. If there community jg . I i _-_■
