Little Rhoda’s life saw little change. Her mother, perhaps, was the heroine of the trip. The day before she left Sperryville, the. doctor had visited her. However, though her health appeared to break on parts of the trip, wh^n she at last reached Missouri, she weighed more than she had when she began the trip.
Early each morning, Mrs. Mason would leave her bed in the wagon, trying not to wake the children. She would gather in the clothes she had washed the night before, and then start breakfast before waking the men, who spent the night in an open tent. It had to be a big breakfast, for what was left over muSt be enough for lunch. The next long stop would be in the late evening wheh all the light was leaving the sky. -
Mr. Mason, riding astride the left horse in the team, had few difficulties in addition to finding good sites for camping. He missed the running water in the Virginia branches. Food was obtained in the small towns that they traveled through in the course of the day.
Little Wayne thoroughly enjoyed the journey. His favorite pasttime in the long days he spent with his mother and sister, was throwing things from his moving home. With childish delight, he consistently subjected everything he could pry loose, to an “outta the wagon” trip. However, one thing deeply concerned Wayne. Often he would midge ‘mother’ when
can give it to them in the form of sponsored dances, organized athletics, clubs and other forms—of wholesome activity, they are much less likely to seek diversion along lines that will only lead them into serious trouble.
