I had occasion to visit Washington, D. C. the other day and while there talked, with our congressman, Burr P. Harrison. Mr. Harrison hasi just returned from a trip to. Cuba as a member of a Congressional Committee. While in Cuba, Mr, Harrison and the Congressman from Arkansas were referred to in the Cuban preys as “Yankee Congressmen”—a new title for our ‘Southern gentlemen.’

While in Cuba Mr. Harrison talked with officials of the Cuban Government on a great variety of ' subjects. A particular interest, of course, was the import-export relationship between Cuba and the United States. In some instances, the Government there, seemed* to ''have struck on uniqu$j*Jlutions to common problems, but in other phases there appeared to be startl/ ing inequalities. The livestock duty is set" “per head’^ and *ibt “per value.” For example there is the same duty imposed on /i 1500 pound horse or steer as on a few ounce baby chick. Thus the duty to the cattle dealer would be ineonsequential whereas to the poultry dealer, it would prove disastrous. This matter, our Representative has taken up with the State Department. i

Mr; Harrison, like all true Virginia representatives, found himself inquiring into the apple import situation. He talked at length 5* with the largest apple buyer in' Cuba. The buyer told Mr. Harrison that “Yes, of course he bought Virginia apples. Last year, he brought approximately 40,000 carloads” ... and about how many other apples from the U.S. “Oh, around 600,000 car loads.

\ This comment bothers us because, it repeats a sentiment heard too often as of Tate. We right here in the middle of apple country can take a bite of a locally grown apple and then wonder why anybody would want any better. They’re A Number 1. And ycy they often do not reflect quality in market demand,
