“Yes?” 1 said.

The voice said something but I couldn’t hear what. A little too loudly I guess I bellowed, “What is it ?” over Joey’s voice, and was . .greeted by silence. I went to the head of the stairs. “What did you say?” I asked somewhat more gently.

Our fair pigtailed one looked up at me. “Daddy, the record player is too much.” Her lip quivered.

“How much?” I asked.

“S-seventy dollars.”
