WHEAT
Growers with good quality wheat, even with garlic, may have a close choice this year between commercial storage under loan and sale to millers on the free market.
Virginia’s interim loan rate will be $2.23 to $226 a bushel for the 1955 crop, less storage charges and a 15-cent discount for garlic. There may also be a problem with the new sanitary requirements.
On the other hand, soft Red winter wheat for milling is relatively short in supply, and millers probably will be buying good wheat with garlic and paying close to the support price less storage and discounts for it.
Also, the free market discount for garlic will be closer to 10 cents .than 15.
When harvest comes, it will pay to get a pencil and do some figuring. With approved farm storage, a man can store and work it either way.
There is little if any commercial storage for barley in Virginia, but the wheat storage situation has eased some from last year.
