Rapp’k Homemakers Attend Lecture On Home Furnishings Miss Ruth Jamison, home furnishings specialist from V.P.I., gave a lecture and demonstration on “Choosing Home Furnishings” in the auditorium at The Hecht Co. store in Arlington last Friday. There were examples of good design in furnishings around * the room, that were taken from stock in the store. They were the kinds, of things that could be purchased in any reliable store with careful shopping. Miss Jamison pointed out some things to be remembered when buying. One of these was to put most of your money in a rug, rather than in small accessories. There are several kinds of rugs to fit various budgets, from inexpensive fiber through braided, rayon pile, and wool and rayon twist, considered the best. , As a rug is considered practically a lifetime investment, careful choice of the best quality in plain surface was advised. Design was next discussed by Miss Jamison. She held up a dear crystal water glass with heavy bottom that would look well with any china' and silver, and compared it wSth a gayly pointed one that would look well with few table settings and told the audience that the price was the same for both styles. The qualities to look for in design are: it attracts and holds interest, it is not monotanous or realistic, but simple, it must be in scale, it must be usable, easy to achieve, simple, and it must create a moode. To illustrate these points, chests of drawers, tables, chairs, lamps, picture frames were all in natural wood of different kinds and periods. Fabrics, china lamps, ash trays and flower bowls were all in “earth tones, from the softest pink of early dawn to the darkest green of the forest.
