Herbert Atkins of Richmond was critically injured and died the way to the University Hospital Thursday night, May 16, when an empty tar tank he was attempting
to move with a tractortrailer exploded. Mr. Atkins, who was 44, and the father; of four children, was thrown about fifteen feet and it was with some difficulty that his body was mpvrd from the flaming tank. ! ’ The accident occurred at SCTa fable and the explosion is said to have been felt in Culpeper, a dstance. of ten miles. The Rejv. George K. Bowman, Maney M efee and William Leake were mong the first to arrive at the of the accident and saw that J. P. Snead was called, also' ambulance from Culpeper.
There has.been some speculate as to how the accident happei but as there were no eyewiti it is impossible to explain it
The tar tank was the pi of Powell and Bowling, Rolal Surfacing contractors of Sandstot, Virginia.
