Back in the 1890’s, everyone in SperryVille knew the telephone operator by her first name, and vice versa, there were no telephone directories printed for the public.
If you didn’t know Nellie Jones’ number and ha'd a choice bit of gossip for her, you rang the operator and asked her to ring Nellse.
Each operator kept her own personal directory—a small notebook in which she wrote the names and numbers of the subscribers.
Warren Dunston, the local telephone manager for .the Culpeper area, came into possession ofr-a 1926 Culpeper Directory the other day. ,
It’s exactly 30 years old and lists 1,674 Culpeper, Madison, Orange, and Sperryville subscribers. That compares with more than 10,264 in the current 1956-56 directory for the entire Culpeper and Orange Areas, including listings in the alphabetical and classified sections, according to Mr: Dunston.
The 1926 directory did not have a classified directory; the present directory has a complete classified telephone section so that Sperryville subscribers can find listed under the proper heading any article or service that they may need.
