Forest tree planting in Rappahannock County for, the 19561957 planting season was recently completed with the planting of some 3,000 loblolly pine, white pine and shortleaf pine seedlings by the Rappahannock High School 1 FA boys on .Hr. J. M. O'Bannon’s farm near Woodville. These trees were hand planteed by the FFA boys under the supervision of Chief > forest Warden Raymond Johnson, County Agent Bill Lyne and Mr. Leonard, Vocational Agriculture Instructor at the high _ school. The seedlings were planted^ on a hillside which was too steep for economical farm operation and wili grow into a future crop of fence posts, pulpwood and sawtimber. 30,000 seedlings were planted in Rappahannock County during the past tree planting season with about 35 million tree* being planted throughout the state. Tree planting is big business.

These trees were planted to check soil erosion', establish wind- ■ breaks or to reforest abandoned land, cutover woqffand or timberland damaged by forest fires. The trees were raised at th Virginia ■ Division of Forstry”s nurseries at Charlottesville and New Kent and may be purchased from the Division of Forestry at the lpw cost of $4.50 to $6.50 per thousand trees delivered to the landowner. A thousand trees will plant an-acre of open land and about 500 trees , will re-plant an acre of cutover woodland. Orders are already being taken for trees to be delivered - for fall planting in 1957 and spring planting in 1958.’ For inr formation concming tree planing and woodland management assistance, contact Chief Forest Warden Raymond M.
