Sunday, August the 4th, was a gala day for YVashington, Virginia as its 208th birthday was celebrated by a tour’of old landmarks and homes and a tea at the Washington House.
The antique fire truck of Washington, with its patient driver, Charlie Jenkins, took many trips*' around the 'town pointing out places of interest to the passengers.
At 3“-o’c!ock, in the C^'^t House' yard, Mrs, White, president of Culpeper D. A. R.’s, presented the United States flag to'the ’town and Mayor Dorothy Davis, surrounded by her ..Council, accepted it.
Then the tea! As you stepped into the ballroom of Ye Olde , Washington House you felt as if you had stepped back two centuries to the time when George Washington was a guest there. Yoir were met at the door and served by gracious ladies and small girls in colonial costumes. The tables in the ballroom were laden with all kinds of delicacies .and beautiful flower arrangements were placed around so that everywhere you looked there was something lovely to see. Washington was the Host to Rappahannock County and its friends. One hundred and eleven people attended the tea.
This was a beautiful birthday party. I’m so proud to be a Rappah an nockian with all of it’s tradition and culture, aren’t you?
