For instance, a merchant is selling meat that averages $1,00 per pound over a scale that has an error of one ounce. The annual error cost for a year of 300 days at weighings a day is $1,875.00. The difference between profit and loss to many merchants. If this emu was in favor of the merchants and against his customers, it could do serious .damage to his reputation as an honest businessman.
A farmer who waits for the market to advance 50c before he sells his hogs, wheat or sovbeans could easily lose the profit he waited for if he sells them over a scale that has a five-pound error.
The two cases mentioned above will, we hope, help to point out the importance of accurate weighing and measuring equipment and the necessity for having an adequate weights and measures program.
