Use Pesticides Safely
By proclamation, the President has dedicated the week of July 21 to 27 as National Farm Safety Week. An important part of national farm safety is the careful use, of pesticides, including fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides.
First aiid foremost to keep in mind according to S. B. Fenne. Extension plant pathologist at VPI, is that State and Federal laws require all pesticides to be labeled with complete information concerning the ingredients, their use. and precautions in.handling.
“This information.’’ said Fenne, “is for your protection and for the protection of the consumer. Therefore, it is important that you always read the information the manufacturer' has .placed on the label and follow these directions carefully. Some pesticides are dangerous to use; however, most of them are quite safe. To be on the safe side, however, it is highly important that you know exactly how the materials you use should he handled.”
Because of the general dematfd a few years ago for greater safety in the application of poisonous pesticides to edible products, the M:ller Amendment to the Federal Pesticide Law, was passed. The purpose of the Miller Amendment was'to sasure greater protection of the public health by improving, simplifying, and speeding up procedure tinder which the Federal law could be made practical.
