Carelessness" Caused

Many Fires

D. G. Wilfong, Jr.. District Forester for the Virginia Division of Forestry recently reported that over twenty-five fires have occurred during the month of July, in the sixteen county Northern Piedmont District. This large number of fires is unusual for the summer months, and brought on . by the period of extreme drought stated Wilfong. * Although no fires have been reported of over five acres in size, at least one fire has been reported fmm each of the. 16 counties in the Charlottesville District. Wilfong further stated that all the fires have' been caused by carelessness and all of them could have been prevented if the responsible persons would have followed good rules of fire prevention.

Usually it is quite easv to stop the spread of summer fires, but • the damage to the burned areas is . great, due to the fact that nearlv all summer fires kill 100 percent of the trees and other vegetation.
