Rijlge Academy where music and languages were taught. v The original part of “The Meadows" owned by Mr. and Mrs. Fields Bentop was built around 1786. This part was a two story four room log structure with a double front porch and a hipped roof, later weatherboarded. The floors are of heart pine. An outside stairway on the front porch ! leads to .the second floor. Several years later a' separate weather boarded house was built adjoining the original house. The interior of this is exceptionally beautiful with its wide hall and lovely winding stairway. During the War Between the States “The Meadows” •was used gs a hospital by the Union'soldiers and those that died there are buried *n the back of the house under a big walnut tre. ; “Castleton House” was built by Mr. James F, Browning prior to the War Between the States and is now owned by Mr. and Mrs Ralph Ingersoll. It is of warm fed brick and i around it art die original tree boxwood -and brick Walks. The grtunds and gardens have been beautifully restored. It is furnished with English antiques of the Sheraton, Hepplewhite and Chippendale periods.
“Castleton House” is considered one of the most outstandingly beautiful homes in the county.
Mystery Farm.
The Mystery Farm last week was a mystery to most of our callcry, for only; two indentified it correctly. It Was “Locust Shade” the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Payne and, their son Billy. It is located on''the “Richmond Road” off Route 211 near Ben Veiiue. The farm is; owned by Mr- and Mrsi, A C. Latham and managed by Mr. and Mrs. Payne.
They have a hyd of Angus cattle, some v^hidh lire purebred. Other livestock is hogs and sheep and they raise hay, corn and small .grain. j- ■ ■ ‘ ' v
