County Agent aOOOPOOOOOOOCKXXltXWtX^^ Studies are underway in an effort to determine why second cutting of clover hay is at times rejected by farm animals after having consumed one bait. The problem appears not to continue year in and year out pn some farm} yet on others it does. In recent rears Henry Wood has had trouble gcrti'ig his beef cows to accept Ms hay.

C. J. A ’lccmcn of the Biochemistry and Nutrition Department has been doing some research on, the problem. He has found the rausitive ageht in th? hav is extractable with water and is stable to heat. One big problem is getting animals on which this can be tested. He reports: “Steers, horsed and sheep will eat this hay only pnee and will then refuse to eat it, making them useless for further studies. We have also tested this on rats, goats, rabbits and guinea pigs with no unusual effects that can be used. We must therefore use fistulated steers or sheep.”

By “fistulated" Dr. Ackerman refers to animals whose stomachs have been punctured from the out side'and kept open either by a tube or window whereby the hay can be placed in the animals digestive tract even though that animal may refuse to eat the hay voluntarily. Cub Scouts Visit

Radio Station

The Sperryville Cub Scouts visited the radio station, WCVA in Culpeper, January 22. Since they have been studying radio station operations they wanted to see how radio brings entertairmjent to their listeners. Mr. John Rogers introduced the group to the staff and explained their duties and how it is carried out to keep a smooth continued program.

The scouts who were present with their Den Mother, Mrs. Jk M. Durden were Phil Hawkins, Jack Weaver, C. E. Dodson, Bill Mundy, Douglas Guilky, Larry Conners, Roy Reeve and Bill Durden.
