As to missiles, the weight of published information indicates we do not have many big ones ready to shoot Mr. Eisenhower told Congress :
“The Adas intercontinental ballistic missile has successfully completed a full-range test and the first operational Atlas missiles will be at launching sites by the end of the current fiscal year. Additional missiles will be- put in place in 1960. The first units of the intermediate range missile Thor have already been deplbved to the United Kingdom and additional units of both Thor and Jupiter will bo deployed during the next 18 months. Construction already is well along on the first five submarines which will be equipped to fire the Polaris solid fuel ballistic missile, and the. first such submarines will go Ihto operation in the calendar year 1960”.
As the crucial efforts to avoid war continue, we can ponder the comments of Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, Army chief of staff, made to a Senate committee several weeks ago, when asked if We could face up to a showdown over Berlin:
“We have all the strength that is necessary if we are willing to mobilize and do so in time”.
Did he mean “mobilize the entire nation?”
“Yes”, General Taylor replied, “you cannot play around in this business unless you have a lot of blue chips in your pocket. This is unlimited poker.” ,
