Why have we such a marked increase in broom-sedge burning this year? Back in 1946-47 it was a very common sight to see flaming hill tops silhouetted against the darkness of night. At that time I could understand why Rappahannock farmers were referred to as “the land burrtingest people in Northern Virginia”. This sort of reputation hurts the pride any county agent has in “his” farmers. We like to write about nice things
like to brag about sound practices “our” farmers carry out. Now and then wc must write and talk about the bitter “pills”. This “bitter pill" had almost become an unknown until February 1959! A man from Greene County handed me the first ribbin’. Then came the report from pne of our preachers, “that he’d been about scared out of his wits upon getting the report that one of his churches was afire, which proved to be a broomsedge field fire”.
