Br Reti. Burr P, Harrison Washington—In 1956, the United States begun what has been , described as the greatest engineering venture in the history of the world.construction of a longplanned network of superhighways .....40,000 miles..—with acelerated improvement of other roads.
It was to take 13 years to build the 40,000 miles and 16 years to pay for them; with the Federal Gevemment putting up 90 per cent of the cost, or $25 billion. The so-called interstate system was superimposed on the long-established 50-50 program of FederalState cost-sharing under which primary' and secondary roads, and cer-• tain major city' streets, are widened and rebuilt. All federal shares \,were to be paid from gasoline and certain other highway-user ta\e> reserved in a highway trust fund.
