BEEF CATTLE
Favorable prices for feeder calves are expected this fall. Don’t hold too many heifen for replacement stock.
There’s going to be more cattle on feed but the holdback on cow and calf slaughter will make die total slaughter not much above last year—ind last year was mighty low. So, this would indicate that prices would continue strong into fall.
Slaughter is still running under last year. The January through May figures on federally inspected slaughter against the same period a year ago tallies up a fraction under one per cent lower for steers; 14 per cent more for heifers; 22 per cent down for cows; and an 18 per cent drop in calves.
