We have noted that nearly $3 billion was written into the appropriation (bill for price supports, soil bank and overseas disposal. In contrast, the entire Agricultural Conservation (ACP), under which individual farmers are paid for certain soil-saving practices, is down for less than a tenth as much, and all the conservation, watershed protection and flood prevention, work of the Soil Conservation Service is covered for less than a twentieth as much. All agricultural research accounts for only a minor fraction of federal spending on agriculture.
Incidentally, dunrng the House consideration of the appropriation bill, a parliamentary technicality was raised against the money item for the federal poultry inspection, program, and all money for this purpose was stricken from the bill. It is to be expected, however, that funds will be restored in the Senate.
