Soil Testing At VPI

Soil testing is one of the first steps to efficient farming, so says VV. H. Lyqe, county agent in Rappahannock. He points out that the Agronomy Department at VPI, which provides soil testing facilities for Virginia farmers, last year ran tests on 73,330 samples. In "”1959 Rappahannock farmers had 452 complete tests made and 29 samples tested for PH and lime.

Lyne sayis that the 9oil test can help farmers determine lime and fertilizer needs. Tests run on samples submitted to the VPI laboratory are PH, calcium, magnesium, organic matter, phosphate and potash.

He says i it takes well trained people to haindle soil tests accurately. The Soil Testing Laboratory in the Agrpnomy Department at VPI has wjell trained laboratory technicians, j supervisors and research advisors.

Emmett D. Reynolds is laboratory supervisor and has been irr charge of the lab since its beginning in 1938. That year about 2,000 samples were run as compared to last year’s 73,330. Four other well tlrained technicians are employed full time and additional technicians are employed during the rush season. The Soil Testing Laboratory is administratively under the Agricultural Extension Service and W. \V. Lewis, Agronomist, keeps a close check op it. The research agronomists who advise on methods and techniques are Dr, C. IJ Rich and Dr. G. W.
