When we consider that we now have less than three acres of cropland from which each person in the United States must be fed and clothed, and when we consider how this small remainder is being hacked at from both ends, we begin to see why this business of conserving our agricultural resources is everybody’s business and not just something for the farmers to worry about. Our soil is the very foundation of our happiness, our prosperity, and our progress. We fought and won two great wars within the last forty years. Our victories were due in a large part to the food and fiber produced on the farms. Today American farmers are faced with the task of feeding an ever-increasing population and at the same time maintaining our national strength for the future.
