plans were approved by the Federal Government, the States would receive from the Federal Treasury (not from the Social Security TrustFund ) between 50 and 65 percent of the cost of the program. The estimated initial annual overall Federal contribution is $165 million, but this estimate is entirely based on a guess as to how many States go into the program, and how extensively.
State plans could underwrite costs to eligible citizens of 65 and over for up to 120 days a year of care in a hospital; skilled nursinghome services; physicians’ services; hospital outpatient services; organized home-care services; privateduty nursing; therapeutic services; major dental treatment; laboratory and X-ray services up to $200 a year and prescribed drugs up to $200 a year.
