Neither the average citizen nor the authorities would seriously consider that the water could stop entirely. They' had had warning when the Stuart utility house had burned, before the town had connected tp the well, and it was generally realized that the springs which furnished water were always inadequate in “dog days”. This property was saved by a bucket brigade due to the fact that Moffett's w’ell was inexhaustible.
It was 8:30 a.m. Someone was burning off their garden after digging their potatoes. The fire siren was sounded. No one was alarmed.
“Where is the fire?”
“Oh just a little frame buildingon Gay Street. Good riddance, it will probably improve the looks ot the town.”
The fire company responded promptly. They got no water. The blaze was almost extinguished by the auxiliary tank of the fire truck. That supply exhausted, it caught to the Keeler building, the hotel, the Thornton garage. From there it whipped to the Clopton building, thence to E. B. Cary’s and the Updike home. A breeze sent sparks across to the old post office building. Fortunately with a recession and change of the wrind. Lea’s Store, being brick and somewhat fireproof, it progressed no further.
