Madison County wilt be host of the Area Agronomy School this year to be held on Thursday, February 9th. Not only has the committee arranged for “Top Bracket” speakers, but, as usual, has extended a “warm welcome” to Rappahannock farmers and dealers.
The program, which will be held in the War Memorial Building gets underway at 10 o’clock with a fundamental subject: “Using The Soils of Madison and Greene Counties” by none other than our former neighbor, G. R. Epperson. While his topic does not include Rappahannock, similarity of our soils will automatically make his talk apply to us. , .
At eleven Allen Kates, who is respected and sought by every Rappahannock farmer who knows him, will lead a discussion on “Weed Control, in This Area”. Weeds have become an economic problem on every farm, in com, alfalfa, pastures, orchards, and there are even weed trees in our forests robbing us of income from wooded acres!
With the problems of weed and insect control in Alfalfa plus the problem of chemical residues, many, farmers are wondeeing whether it will or will not pay them to grow the “Queen of Forage Crops” any longer, or what other crop can be substituted; how to get optimum quality from the h%y crop, whs£ ever it might be. John Shoulders, a top flight man on forages will lead this discussion.
He will be followedby H. L. Dunton, head of the VPl Agronomy Department, who will talk on “Using the Right Feftilizer.” "Lank” is easy to listen to and his brain is “chock full” of practical ideas. Considering our total Agricultural Outlook; considering the costs of major items farmers buy, his choice of analysis fertilizer, and the amount to be used, is of greater economic importance than ever before!
The program will be concluded with a panel of leadiny farmers and businessmen in the field of agriculture; Terry Curtis-Virginia Farm Bureau President and successful dairyman; Turpin Willis, Major Montgomery, Neut Lohr, Price 'Eddins and Frank Walker, Jr.! If these men can’t give you the right scoop on “Feed Production Programs”, I sure don’t know who can. After all, regardless of what Extension Workers or the Research Boys say, the businesses of agriculture are the final proving ground for the production of any farm commodity.
