November and December. Since the first of the year, total red meat supplies this year are well under last year at the same time, jut this is tempormr. However; it las held wholesale beef prices up. Another help to cattle prices has been fhat with plenty of cheap feed, there has been an orderly marketing pattern, with no bunchings to start prices skidding.
It also looks as if demand has sicked up more or less permanently for beef. Increases in beef supplies this past few months have not brought price decreases in propor. :ion. < Oi Virginia auctions last week, :hoice slaughter steers averaged $26.25, Good grade $2425 and Standard $22.25. In Chicago, daughter steers topped at $29.50, with Choice and Prime at $26.25 to $29, Good and Choice at $25.50 to $27, and Good grade steers at $24.50 to $2625.

If you have hay you know you are going to sell, now is a good time to hunt a buyer. '
Demand is light, 'hut k will probably be even lighter later on. Holding, you are gambling oh bad weather, which baled out farmers with hay to sell last year.
Meanwhile, hay being imported from the west is pretty much setting a ceiling on dealer prices, at least half for alfalfa
Farm prices for hay in the barn last week were running as high as $40 a ton for U.S. Number One Alfalfa, but there was preciou little of this grade to be had.
Number two leafy alfalfa was bringing $30 to $35 and straight Number Two alfalfa, which was mostly first cuttings, $25 to $28. Top quality timothy was bringing $22 to $23 and clover-timothy mixes $22 to $25.
For fanners buying hay, a small amount of Number One Alfalfa was sold in Norfolk a’-ea for $55. Number two leafy in Richmond
