World Health Day

Dr. Mack 1. Shanholtz, State Health Commissioner, announced today that April 7 has been designated by countries throughout the world as World Health Day. This is the anniversary of the day in 1-943 on which the World Health Organization, one of die specialized agencies of the United Nations, came into existence.
Each year a special problem is selected for emphasis and the theme for 1961 is “Accidents Need Not Happen.” , “Accidents are the fourth leading'cause of death in Virginia," Dr. Shanholtz stated, “exceeded only by heart disease, cancer, and cerebral Vascular lesions. Although progress is being made in research and in accident prevention it is still the individual who determines whether or not an accident will occur.”
As an example of the research being undertaken in safety, Dr. Shanholtz cited the five-county Accident Prevention Project that is-drawing to a conclusion in Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren Counties, and the city of Harrisonburg. Physicians and hospitals in this area have been reporting accidents since July 1, 1958. A “normal”accident experience rate was established ’Or a year ending June 30, 1959. Since that time an intensive educational campaign has been undertaken in the area to determine if community education can prevent accidents.
Dr. Shanholtz concluded b y urging each citizen of Virginia to make World Health Day an occasion "to correct accident hazards in the home, to drive more carefully, and to provide safe places for children to play.”
