Many persons in Rappahannock County whose claims for social security retirement or surviviors benefits were disallowed in the past because the worker had not worked enough, may now qualify for these benefits by filing new claims. In making this announcement, Miss Florence Schaffner, Field Representative of the Alexandria Social Security District Office, said this change, one of several important ones in the 1960 Amendments, is due to the fact that the amount of work needed to make social security benefits payable to a worker and his family has been reduced by about onethird in most cases. This applies to any case, whether or not a claim was ever filed.
In explaning how this new rule works, Miss Schaffner emphasizes that at least 6 quarters (18 months) of social security earnings are still required as always, and th maximum is still 40 quarters. There is no change in the requirement for disability benefits. A person must have five years’ work in the last 10 years before becoming disabled. Miss Schaffner illustrated how much easier it is for persons reaching retirement age in 1961, for example, to meet the new requirement: under the old rules they would have needed 20 or 21 quarters, but may now qualify with 13 quarters. Workers who reached retirement age or who died before 1957 need only 6 quarters to be insured. Proportionate reductions are in effect for all cases, within the above limits.
Miss Schaffner invited interested persons to secure arty of the free pamphlets at her office covering these and all other phases of the Social Security Program, as well as to obtain further information and assistance in filing benefit claims.
