In fact, one of his contemporary critics pointed out that with Delacroix “astonishment preceeds admiration.” In 1828 his hostile critics agreed with the “Moniteur Universel” which said of his “Death of Sardanapolis" at the Salon that “the eye cannot untangle the confusion of lines and colors.”
But it was this very “confusion of lines and colors” that he used to create the astonishment which led to admiration. A painter from the age of seventeen, orphaned at enghteen Delacroix supported himself during the early part of his career by caricatures and lithographs. Thoroughly/trained in his art he not only executed many canvases which are monuments of die romantic movement and which influenced the later Impressionists, but he was given official commissions of considerable importance, among them the murals in the Library of the Chamber of Deputies and the ceiling of die Galerie d’ Apollon in th$ Louvre.
