Teaching, Job For
Women In Virginia |.j
In Virginia teaching is still much more a woman’s job than a man’s. In 1959-60, onlyt 1 out of 20 of our elementary teachers was a man (5.5%). In thej nation as a whole, the percentage of male elementary teachers is more than twice as great as in Virginia.
One out of 3 Virginia high school teachers is a man j( 36.3%). ? In the nation as a whole, one-half of the high school teachers are men. |
However, when we move into the supervisory realm which includes supervisors, directors of instruction, and principal*, we find that in 1959-60, in Virginia, 57% or more than half are |men. The pay differential is responsible for this situation. Many a male teacher, be he .elementary or high sdux>l, would rather teach than anything in the world; but wdien he gets married and starts raising a family, the financial allure of a supervisor position, in justjke to his family, cannot'be withstood.
