CATTLE
Look for contirtued firmness in slaughter cattle prices for the next two or three weeks. Same choice beef may draw higher prices. ■ A prevailing good price is expected to remain steady until larger numbers of cattle now on feed are sent to market. This is seen during late February and March. Prices then will generally adjust lower but this will be mostly seasonal.
The January 1 cattles on feed report released by the USDA revealed that the number of cattle being fed in the 26 major feeding states is up two per cent over last year. Other minor states raise the national increase up to three per cent.
Cattle slaughter during 1961 will total about three per cent more than in 1960. However, this has been in line with the population growth and has been fully absorbed with the increased amount of disposable income.
It is felt that if cattle can be fed to a higher grade within the next 30 days it would pay to do so _.otherwise they should be 9old as finished. /
On Virginia auctions last week, iters wmre 25 cants higher. Qb*d grade steers averaged $24 with standard grade at $21.75. At Chicago good grade steers sold from $23 to $25 with some mixed choice and prime $26.75 to $27.50.
