We later found that the kamaburo (oven) is used only in this area and comes from a lord who 1,000 years ago was shot in the shoulder with an arrow. An oven was made for him and his shoulder healed. Since then everyone in this area has used them.
After our bath we had supper as usual with many many courses, all on separate dishes and artistically arranged. We started, with raw fish and vegetables. Next it was cooked fish and stew then rice and soup and a dried persimmon.
Presently it was time for bed.. Our futons (sleeping mats) were all made and there were strange little tilings covered with cloth and filled with charcoal to keep us warm.
New**Years Day we were in j Toyko. There was no traffic and hardly any people at all. All Japanese stay home on New Years Day. This is part of their traditional celebration. We stopped for tea and then went to the convent for retreat. The retreat was marvelous. Four days of silence with reading, lectures, meditation and praver.
Thursday we took a train to Arkakura where we were meeting some Japanese girls for skiing. They met us and took us to where we were staying. We had baths, breakfast and went to rent skiis. The operator of the ski shop was an expert skiier and offered to teach me to ski. Well, 1 tried. I told them to find me a little hill and show me what to do first, then let me practice. What they called a little hill was about the size of the intermediate slope up Harris Hollow. It took me two hours and many, many falls to get down' the hill the first time. The second
