Dear Editor:
It is gratifyfing to note the large number of Rappahannock citizens who have manifested an active in* terest in reviving the support for the American Red Cross functions within the County, despite declining memberships and donations during the past several years.
This is particularly encouraging to me because, of all the fourteen specializezd services carried on throughout the world, the Blood Program is the most difficult to sustain in areas which fail to con* tribbute as much of this vital fluid as they consume. For Blood, unlike other supplies and monetary support can only be obtained from any donor ,a single pint at a time regardless of the generosity of fthe donor.
It follows, therefore, that when a non-contributing area requires 175 pints, as Rappahannock did last year, while contributing 23 pints—152 pints must be found J elsewhere. 152 pints, that is, beyond the needs of the contributing area! • The increased medical uses for blood and the increased popula-1 tion needing it have reduced the | surpluses from the communities! meeting and exceeding their quota, j to the point where the distribution of free blood to non-contributing j areas in many sections can no long- j er be made or tolerated lest the
