The best forest fire control record the State of Virginia has ever had occurred in 1961. Only 1,158 fires were reported by the Virginia j Division of Forestry, and they burned a total of only 3,807 acres of forest land. This represents a scant 0.027 of one per cent of the area under protection, which is good even for such asbestos states as Vermont or New Hampshire. It means* in other words, that fire occurred in only, one acre ouf of every 3,679 acres of forest land for which the State has protection responsibilities.
Just how good this record is can be seen by comparing it with the protection standards which have been established for Virginia. These standards are prepared in cooperation with the U. S.
