hts been set at not to exceed 0.150 of one per cent, which means that as much as 21,000 acres of forest land could be burned over Ln a year’s time and the result would still be considered as acceptable in the region. The fact that Virginia has been under the standard every year since 1954, and< that it has gpne above the standard only twice durimg the past fifteen or more years, speaks well for the uniformly high quality of protection provided by the Virginia Division of Forestry.
Five counties have perfect records for 1961. They are Craig, Clarke, Frederick, Highland and Shenandoah. Three others, Bath, Richmond and Rockbridge, had less than 0.001 of one per cent of their forested areas burned. The most fires, 95 ,occurred in Henrico County and the biggest per cent of burn, 0.247 of one per cent, happened in Norfolk County. *
In Rappahannock County rhere was one forest frie in 1961, which burned eight acres out of the total 64,800 acres of forest acreage protected. Our hats off to Chief Fire Warden Raymond Johnson and his assistants.
Smokers caused the greatest number of fires, 340, in Virginia in 1961. Brush burning was second, 270. \
