Rappahannock County opened its public schools on Monday for the current session. For many pupils going to school is an event which has been happening each September since they became six years of age; but, nevertheless, it is still a time when they and we need to follow the general ruleB of safety. For a large group of youngsters, entering school Tuesday was their first experience in being thrown with so many other children.
Kids don’t change - they are still boisterous, or shy, or mischievous. They're usually impulsive. They run - they dart - they chase balls, or dpgs, or each other - sometimes into the street. Sometimes they look, sometimes they don’t. Unfortunately, many have been hurt or killed that way.
Let us do our part to help them live. Be especially alert rear schools! Regard a child as a human caution sign, when you’re behind the wheel of your vehicle. Expect a child to do the UNEXPECTED!
If you drive children to school, the following safety tips can help: 1. Have children sit well back in the seat to insure safety in case of sudden stops. 2. Have car doors closed tightly and locked; prevent children from playing with door handles. 3 Have a designated spot where the child is dropped off and picked up each day. 4. Have this pre-arranged spot on the school side of the street only, do not permit children to cross between parked cars or in traffic. 5. Have respect for all traffic laws and school regulations.

School Pupils Have Vision Problems
Eleven clues to possible vision problems in a child were outlined today by the Virginia Optometric Association.
Dr. Gordon S. Buchanan, President, says four out of 10 school children have vision deficiencies which handicap them in school work and prevent maximum achievement.
