Feed And Feet
Feed and feet are two big items in pony care, says George Litton, head of Virginia Polytechnic Institute’s animal husbandry department. -A pony is an enjoyable piece of property when he is amply fed, but not stuffed, and when he can walk on feet that never ache.
Under ordinary pony use, pasture will be enough feed for the summer. Ponies should be fed good quality roughages — short, sweet, green, succulent Grain feeding on good pasture adds too much fat, makes ponies pudgy and slow — even shortens their lives. With hard riding every day, though, pasture may not be enough. If ponies start losing weight, feed them some grain.
The standard winter feeds are oats and grass hay. For idle ponies, feed D/fc to 1^* pounds of hay for each 100 pounds of body weight. For ponies being ridden or worked, change these amounts to include V2 pound of grain and 1 to 1'^ pounds of hay per 100 pounds of body weight. Very heavy use will require more grain.
