Mrs. Tom Smoot of Washington celebrated her 81st birthday on September 7th. She was the mother of 17 children, 12 of whom are living; 52 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smoot, the former Etta B. French, was born in 1884 at Wrapping, a small village near Linden. She was one of seven children. Her parents moved to Virginia from the west and she came to Rappahannock County when she was 15 years old, living with a former school teacher, Mrs. Lena Walter Moore, for three years. At this time she married Mr. Smoot who died in I960, after 57 years of marriage.
