Just below Dickey Ridge there is a section where all trees have turned brown bur it is thought this is due to the longsummer drought in this section of the state. Near the Dickey Ridge picnic grounds at Mile 4.7 the black gum is beginning to turn red and the birch and hickory are taking on a yellow hue. Central (U. S. 211 south to U. S. 33) - Green is predominant with some change in the maple, gum, hickory, sumac and Virginia creeper. Golden brown and russet are' prevalent in the undergrowth and in the open area at Big Meadows.

One way people elsewhere become acquainted with 4-H is through “IFYE,” now 17 years old. In 1964, more than 200 young men and women were “IFYE’s”, 102 outbound U. S. delegates representing 38 States, and 102 inbound exchanges representing 39 countries. The purpose of National 4-H Week is to increase public understanding of 4-H aims and methods, and expand support for activities. For more than 50 years, the 4-H program has helped develope good citizens. 4-H Club work helps young people gain new knowledge, skills and attitudes, and to develope talents, personality and leadership through real-life experiences.
