Late autumn foliage Is still spectacular at elevations below 2,000 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. Looking down the mountains from the overlooks along the Skyline Drive or looking up from the valleys, the slopes are aglow, like dying embers, with the wine-red of dogwood and russets and browns of various species of oak, highlighted by the yellows of sycamores and tulip poplars. Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins announced that because of the extended color season, many Park and concession facilities will remain: open. Although Big Meadows Lodge will close October 30, Skyland Lodge and Shenandoah’s two visitor centers at Dickey Ridge and Big Meadows will remain in operation through November 5. The concession operated fact lities at Loft Mountain Camp ground and service station have been closed for the sea-1 son but this campground and the ones at Lewis Mountain and Big Meadows are still open to camping. Concession operated facilities for campers at Big Meadows will re main in operation as long as weather permits or when freez ing temperatures occur. However, the Big Meadows Campground sites are open to camp ing year around.
