humanity, and we can identify the elements which may bring extinction about. Nor longer does it seem implausible that oiir way of life, the structure of our society, can be wiped out or transformed. We know that it can. Societies do rise, decline, transform themselves, rearrange their relationships. “We make war in the name of ‘peace’, we kill in order to ‘protect’, we destroy the city, as we say, because it is the only way to save it; we call for reason but speak in the tongues of madness; we call for domestic tranquillity in voices even louder and rhetoric more and more debased.” But the author is far from hopeless. “If hope is to be found,” he writes, “it must be found within Durselves; in a perception of the real nature of our times, the real nature of our troubles, an understanding of why so many are so disillusioned, so dissatisfied, so tortured; an understanding of where we stand today and how we got here; of what went wrong and what can make it right.” In a chapter entitled “The Flag is in Trouble”, Salisbury counts himself as one American who is shocked because this historic symbol of our unity and devotion is being used by some self-styled patriots as a club, while it is being spurned or defaced by others. “I love the American flag,” he writes, “love to see it flying, get a thrill out of the colors although for
