occur shortly after the criminal charge is made. The prompt trial of criminal cases is indispensable to effective law enforcement. 1 would prefer to see the 120 day period be fixed at 90 days.
ALSO, I FAVOR the creation of a Court of Criminal Appeals as a court of last resort for the appeal of criminal cases. Again, this would speed up the disposition of criminal cases and is preferable to the creation of-an intermediate appeals court between the circuit courts and the Virginia Supreme Court.
The Commission made a number of other proposals, and since its report has been published for only a few weeks, it is uncertain as to what action the General Assembly will take; and most members may want to have more time to consider the report and to enact legislation in 1973. 1 do not object to this, but 1 would like to see action in this session on the points mentioned.
