WHAT DO I OWE to you, who loved me deep and long? You never gave my spirit wings nor taught my heart a song. But, oh to her I love, who loves me not at all,
I owe the little gate that leads through heaven’s wall.
What thought is the poet attempting to convey? To my way of thinking, she is saying “It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” Or, even in love, it is better to give than to receive. To be able to give love is to fulfill God’s,law.
Paul says that if he had all the qualities that make a whole man, even of angels, and could not love, he would be completely empty. He seems to think that love is satisfied just to give of its self, it does not insist on having it’s love returned; of having it’s own way.
What do I owe to HIM, HE has loved me deep and long, ,
HE has given my spirit wings, and taught my heart a song. What do we owe to Him? The earth is His and the fulness thereof. Let us think on these things.
